Why Your Google Business Profile Is Not Showing Up (and the 12-Point Fix)

Your listing exists but customers cannot find it. Here are the twelve reasons a Google Business Profile disappears, from suspensions to a wrong category, with the fix for each.

You searched your own business and it is not on the map. Or it shows up for your name but never for "plumber near me." Both are common, and both are fixable. Work down this list in order.

Is it suspended, unverified, or just not ranking?

Open your Google Business Profile manager. If you see a red suspended banner, skip to point 12. If it says verification needed, that is point 1. If it is verified and live but does not appear for service searches, it is a ranking problem: points 2 through 11.

The 12-point fix

1. Finish verification. An unverified profile is invisible. Google now often requires a short video showing the business, signage, and equipment. Do it properly the first time.

2. Wrong primary category. The single biggest ranking lever. "Contractor" will not rank for "plumber." Pick the most specific category for your main service.

3. Missing secondary categories. Add every category that truthfully describes what you do. Check the top three competitors and take only the ones that are true for you.

4. Service-area business showing an address it should not. If you go to customers and do not have a storefront, hide the address and set your service areas. Showing a home address can trigger a suspension.

5. Name, phone, or website differs across the web. Google cross-checks Yelp, BBB, Angi, Facebook, and your own site. One stray old phone number quietly lowers trust. Fix every listing to match the profile exactly.

6. No new photos. A profile that has not posted a photo in months reads as inactive. Add real job photos weekly.

7. Reviews stopped. Velocity matters more than totals. Ask after every job, by text, with the direct link. Reply to every review.

8. Services and description are empty. Fill in each service under the right category with a plain-language description. Google reads these to decide what you rank for.

9. The website does not match. If your site does not mention the service or the towns on the profile, Google has nothing to confirm. One page per real service, service area written in sentences.

10. Duplicate listings. An old profile from a previous owner or address splits your signals. Find and merge or remove it.

11. You are checking from the wrong place. Rankings change block by block. Searching from your office proves nothing. Use a rank map across your service area to see where you actually appear.

12. Suspension. Usually caused by a keyword-stuffed name, a fake address, a virtual office, or a category that does not match the business. Fix the cause first, then file the reinstatement form with proof: license, utility bill, signage photos, vehicle photos. Do not resubmit repeatedly; each rejection makes the next one slower.

How long until it shows up

Verification and suspension fixes take days to a few weeks. Category and consistency fixes can move rankings within two to six weeks. Building enough reviews and photos to hold the top three in a competitive Southwest Florida market takes months of steady work.
